Radial Nerve

  • Leaves the axillary artery with the profunda brachii artery in the axilla to innervate the triceps muscle
  •  The profunda brachii artery follows the radial nerve as it moves from the axillary artery towards the spiral groove of the humerus
  • It can be damaged with humerus fractures

Anatomy

  • From the posterior cord of the brachial plexus
  • Innervates the extensor-supinator muscle group and provides sensory innervation to the posterior aspect of the elbow, forearm and hand
  • CPT 64450 76942

Indications for Block

  • Forearm and hand surgeries

  • Analgesia for acute pain

  • Radial tunnel syndrome

  • Recalcitrant lateral epicondylalgia

Clinical Significance

With the introduction of ultrasound-guided procedures, the use of local peripheral nerve blocks for surgical anesthetic, post-operative pain, acute and chronic pain syndromes, as well as a variety of other purposes, has dramatically expanded.

Additionally, the use of ultrasound has reduced the risk of local anesthetic toxicity while increasing the efficacy and efficiency of the peripheral nerve block overall .
